(KMOV) –A couple is facing unique charges after they attempted to scam an elderly woman into fake home repair services in Madison County.

The East Alton woman said she was duped out of more than $1,000 after trusting the wrong man to fix her roof and basement.

“I was really stupid but once I figured out what was going on I made sure that they got picked up,” the victim said. “He went to my basement and said there was cracks in my basement and water in my basement which I didn't.”

The suspect, Robery Gayan, was allegedly showing fake pictures of roof and basement damage and the victim couldn’t check it out for herself since she is handicapped.

But she still felt something was fishy and called police, who arrested Gayan and his wife, Julia.

The couple faces charges of aggravated home repair fraud. A specific charge Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons said is more than appropriate in this case.

“Anyone who would think about taking advantage of someone who's disabled or taking advantage of one of our senior citizens this aggravated section which makes a much higher penalty definitely is there to deter them,” said Gibbons.

“I want them to be in jail for a while and understand that they can't do this to senior citizens or anybody,” the victim said.
