(KMOV) – The weekend is a happy time for most school children, but for a few it is a time of stomach-churning hunger. A local grandmother is leading a new effort to put food on the hungry children’s’ table.
The effort is fronted by Vicki Tamboli who created “Brenden’s Friday Backpack.” The idea of “Friday Backpacks” is becoming common across the country.
Tamboli delivers the plain bags of food, which have enough for three meals a day and a snack, to the children on Fridays.
“They literally go from Friday lunch with nothing to eat until they come back Monday morning for their free meal,” Tamboli said. “We have had social workers at another school tell us that these kids try to steal milk, they take home ketchup and mustard, mayo packets to use as their meals…just breaks my heart.”
The program started in September with four children at one school district but has since spread to seven districts and approximately 170 children…and it keeps growing.
