(KMOV) – The Northwest R-1 School district said it’s heard from a handful of parents who say they’ve been approached by two teens claiming to be raising money for a fourth-grader with serious illness.
The principal of Brennan Woods Elementary learned of the sentimental storyline that turned out to be a scam this week.
“I was very surprised to hear that not only did this happen, that they were so specific. That it was one of our students at a certain grade level. I was very surprised,” said Susan Wingenbach.
The student they spoke about doesn’t exist and the story, made up.
Parents say over the weekend the teens hit a nearby neighborhood going door-to-door with a story so convincing that at least one parent made a donation.
For some, the red flag went up and they contacted the school district.
“Try to get money out of people, by telling fake cancer stories, and a lot of that is going on,” said a resident. “It doesn’t surprise me with all the news in the world. People have no morals anymore.”
Northwest R-1 is warning parents in the community to contact the school before making a donation.
