(KMOV) –Classes were canceled for the remainder of the week for an East St. Louis middle school after a fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

According to a note sent home to the parents and guardians of Lincoln Middle School students, a fire in the seventh grade wing caused property damage and filled the wing with smoke.

The fire was extinguished prior to students arriving, and the seventh grade wing was closed.

The building was evacuated immediately and students were sent home via bus transportation.

A police investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. The school will remain closed for the remainder of the week as crews work to repair the damaged wing.
