(KMOV) – A Troy, Mo. woman was hospitalized after she tried to save her dog from a burning home on Tuesday.

According to firefighters, a woman left her home in the 300 block of Merle Dr. and returned around 11:20 a.m. to find it engulfed in flames.

Officials say she went inside to save the dog but was pushed back by heat and heavy smoke. The dog did not survive.

Fire crews responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicle and neighboring mobile homes.

The woman was covered in black soot and had a minor burn on her arm. She was taken to the hospital for signs of heavy smoke inhalation. Her condition was unknown.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
