(KMOV) -- The Kirkwood School District on Tuesday welcomed nearly 200 new students from the unaccredited Riverview Gardens schools.

District officials in Kirkwood say the later start date has given the district a bit of a preperation advantage over the four other districts significantly involved in this transfer program. Those districts are Francis Howell, Riverview, Mehlville and Normandy.

Over the last several weeks, the number of Riverview students transfering to Kirkwood has continued to grow.

Kirkwood Superintendent Tom Williams said his district has worked closely with Riverview officials to make it all come together as smoothly as possible.

The district became a part of this plan when Mehlville, the district Riverview Gardens chose to accept its transferring students, said it couldn’t take any more students.

That was a result of the Missouri Supreme Court’s ruling that students could transfer out of unaccredited schools to schools in better, nearby districts.
