(KMOV.com) – Budget cuts are bringing a military funeral tribute to an end in Jefferson Barracks.

The buglars who play Taps for funerals are paid only $25, but the Missouri National Guard announced this week the live Taps would no longer be paid for.

Instead, Taps will be played from an audio recording on a small speaker.

A spokesman for the buglers in the St. Louis area said it is disrespectful.

"When you get a live buglar there spirit and soul, just like the spirit the veterans gave and now you're going to give them a fake buglar?  Its unbelievable."

The Honors Buglar Program had been in place for 13 years.
