(KMOV.com) - Some residents in Granite City say something strange is in the air.

Residents wonder if a foul smell is coming from the SunCoke Energy facility, which is a relative newcomer to the steel industry in Granite City. Christina Warden says she smells it early in the morning.

"Really stuffy, sick, headaches, it's awful, it's an awful smell, awful feeling," Warden said.

SunCoke did settle a suit in 2013 with the EPA for environmental violations in Granite City and paid nearly $2 million in fines.

News 4 attempted to obtain a comment from the company but SunCoke did not provide one.

The company’s website states that are committed to compliance with laws and regulations.

A spokesperson for the Illinois EPA says they do have air monitors in the area but nothing unusual has been detected.
