(KMOV) – A local Iraq war veteran says watching key areas of that country fall into the hands of the enemy is making his recovery from war even tougher.

“I was a good soldier,” said Mike Bleckler. “My injuries are on the inside and not on the outside, physically.”

Bleckler returned home in 2005 and has battled depression, memory loss, and PTSD all as a result of his experiences in the Iraq War. Bleckler says he has nightmares that force him to wake up in a cold sweat.

“There are triggers that set things in motion,” Bleckler said. “(Things) that make you irritable or make you afraid to drive down the road.”

Both Bleckler and his father, Larry, a Vietnam veteran, say they feel like the efforts the United States attempted to make in Iraq are all in vain now.

“We convinced those people that we were the greatest thing,” said Larry Bleckler. “We were going to help them build a democracy and now we’ve left them over there helpless.”

Mike says he feels like all the sacrifices he made are worthless now.

“We just went over to show that we could do it and that’s the end of it.”
