(KMOV) – A mother and two children were killed in a wreck on Interstate 55 in Macoupin County on Friday, according to the county coroner.
Authorities say a man, woman and their four kids were on northbound I-55 at mile marker 50 around 5:20 a.m. when a white cargo van rear-ended their Chevrolet Impala that was either stalled or slowed.
The mother, who was in the passenger seat, and two of the children were pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver was airlifted to Springfield Hospital. The other two kids were taken to Cardinal Glennon. Their conditions were not released.
The driver of the van was OK, officials said.
Police did not release the genders or ages of the children who died.
Illinois State Police are investigating what caused the Impala to slow or stall on the road. Police say an off-duty officer at one point swerved and missed the car.
Interstate 55 North was closed for about four hours while crews cleaned up the scene. Traffic was rerouted off the highway at mile marker 44 and back onto the interstate at mile marker 52.
