(KMOV) – An environmental group claims that emissions from an Ameren Missouri power plant is putting your family’s health at risk, but Ameren Missouri refutes that claim.
It does admit that its Labadie plant in Franklin County has increased its emissions of mercury since 2001. Environment Missouri just issued a new report showing this plant at the second most polluting plant in the country when it comes to mercury.
Mercury is particularly harmful for pregnant women, nursing mothers and small children, says Ted Mathys of Environment Missouri. He says it can cause motor-control problems and lower IQs in small, developing brains.
Ameren Missouri says studies have shown no significant health risk from mercury, but technology is now available to control those emissions.
The company is awaiting new EPA regulations, and says that’s when it will address the issue.
