BELLEVILLE, Ill.—Vandals have struck the family home of an injured Marine visiting his relatives in the Metro East for the Christmas holidays.

The Van Etten family awoke Christmas Even to find their home in the 1200 block of Farmington drive defaced with racial slurs spray painted on the siding and raw eggs thrown at various spots around the home. The defacement was reported to police around 9 a.m. Monday.

Lance Cpl. Chris Van Etten lost both of his legs during an explosion in June in Afghanistan.  Van Etten is home visiting family for Christmas and has been in California rehabbing since he sustained the injury in June.

O’Fallon police Captain Mark Berry says the vandalism appears to be a random act of criminal defacement. Berry says there are no eye witnesses and no other available evidence.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
