FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Monday night a special honor went to a Florissant officer injured in the line of duty.

The City of Florissant awarded Officer Michael Vernon with the Purple Heart.

Vernon was shot and paralyzed while responding to a burglary on Memorial Day. He tells News Four he’s humbled by the honor and that he was “only doing his job.”

“It’s an honor and not very many people get to have it and to be able to wear it proudly,” he said. “You know some people get the Purple Heart and never get to wear it. It’s an honor and I really do appreciate it.”

Ten other officers with the Florissant Police Department were honored with the Purple Heart.
