(KMOV) – Police are questioning a 24-year-old “person of interest” after an infant was severely abused in East St. Louis.

A woman and her five-month-old daughter were living with the man in custody in the John DeSheilds Housing Complex when the alleged abuse took place.

The mother took her daughter to an area hospital after she noticed the child was not acting normally and was suffering from some bruising on Thursday.

“A five-month-old had severe injuries to the head, neck and eyes. The doctor told us the baby had a skull fracture also,” Chief Michael Floore with the East St. Louis Police Department said.

The child is listed in critical condition at this time.

No charges have been fired against the man in custody at this time but authorities are calling him a ‘person of interest.” There is a chance more suspects could face charges.

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office Child-Death Investigation Team has been activated in the case that this infant does not survive.

Further details into the investigation were not immediately known.
