(KMOV) -- The Maryland Heights Police Department has noticed a disturbing trend among the recent rash of robberies, shootings and car break-ins we’ve seen in recent months.

Police Chief Tom O’Connor says that teenage criminals are the newest threat for law enforcement. He says that in the last five years there has been increased crime among young men who know how to avoid jail time.

Just last week, three teens were charged with breaking into 70 cars in Maryland Heights. They were arrested after a high speed chase but before they were caught they pointed a gun at police.

O’Connor says that stiff sentences for gun crimes seem are not deterring the criminals.

He says that his officers are approaching simple larceny calls with much more caution these days.
