(KMOV) -- This year St. Louis judges have increased bond amounts for gun cases, and it appears to be having a significant impact on violent crime.

Now the University of Chicago's Crime Lab is studying the effects.  Researchers have interviewed the police chief, an offender, and Judge Jack Garvey -- the man credited with helping curb gun violence.

"There are some people that are taking their job seriously and understand that crime is a problem, and so we are trying things and trying to make it a better place to live," Judge Garvey said.

If University of Chicago researchers can prove that imposing higher bonds for violent crimes works, St. Louis could set the bar for the entire country.
