FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A Metro-East mother was frightened but not hurt after a confrontation with a burglar who shoved her to the ground at her home Thursday.
Codi Swire says she was taking a shower when she heard banging at a door and realized someone was trying to break in.
Police said the burglary happened on Thursday around 1:05 p.m. in the 9600 block of Old Lincoln Trail.
According to reports, Swire was inside the home was taking a shower when she heard a loud banging noise. When she went to investigate, she saw someone trying to get into the home from a basement door.
"Yeah I jumped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around me," Swire said. "I can't remember if i put any shoes on. But i just picked up my phone and called my husband. He told me to run upstairs really, really quick and hit the panic alarm and I did."
Swire said she went outside to get a look at the burglar as he tried to get away, but his van got stuck and he got out and ran to her. She said the burglar shoved her to the ground and then argued with her, asking her not to tell police.
Codi's husband, Justin Swire, arrived on the scene and pulled out the handgun he uses on the job as a deputy coroner in St. Clair County. He held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.
Steven D. Hood, 28, has been charged with attempted burglary and battery in the case. His bond has been set at $350,000.
St. Clair officials confirm that Hood was on parole and wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle during the incident.
