CHICAGO -- With the first snowstorm of the season expected later today, Illinois transportation officials are warning drivers to get ready.

Rain is expected to turn to snow during the late afternoon and early evening. The National Weather service has said four to eight inches of snow could fall north of Interstate 80, and high winds could reduce visibility.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider said in a statement Wednesday motorists should think twice before venturing onto roadways.

She said drivers should wear their seatbelts, allow extra time to get to their destination, slow down and not crowd snow plows.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is mobilizing more than 550 snow plows. The Illinois Tollway will have its full fleet of 182 plows on the road.
