(KMOV) – The health department in Cook County, Illinois is floating around the idea of adding a tax to soda and other sweet drinks.
Consumers already pay a 6.25 percent tax on sugary drinks, and the new tax would mean an added 2 cents per ounce.
The state public health commission claims that the plan would not only raise revenue, but also help reduce obesity.
The Illinois Beverage Association says it opposed the tax, saying it would cause soda sales to drop, and that would lead to employees losing their jobs.
