CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says alcoholic energy drink manufacturers need to prove their caffeine-laced concoctions are safe.
The Chicago Democrat is weighing in after the Federal Drug Administration asked 30 manufacturers on Friday to prove their safety.
Manufacturers have 30 days to show the FDA that combining alcohol and caffeine in a drink isn't dangerous. They are questioning the products' marketing.
The FDA said it has not approved caffeine for use in alcoholic beverages.
Madigan said she worries the drinks are dangerous for young people.
Her office said Madigan was among the state attorneys general who had asked the FDA to review the safety of the drinks.
