(KMOV) -- Illinois Senator Mark Kirk says he will fight for more defense contracts for the Boeing plant in Hazelwood.

The Senator wants the Navy to purchase 22 additional EA-18-G “Growler” jets, equipped with special jamming technology that can disable enemy fighter’s electronics.

Senator Kirk, who is a Navy Rervist Verteran, says he learned the importance of jamming equipment during combat in Kosovo.

“In my experience in Kosovo, the jamming was absolutely essential to making sure we didn’t have casualties on the U.S side,” Senator Kirk said.

He also came to the St. Louis County Plant on Monday because many Illinois residents work on the Growler assembly line and he plants to meet with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin on Tuesday to discuss the Growler contract.
