ST. LOUIS—Motorists planning to travel through downtown St. Louis on Interstate 70 this weekend should expect some delays.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it will close all lanes of I-70 between Pine Street and the Poplar Street Bridge from 8 p.m. Friday until about 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

Drivers in the eastbound lanes of the interstate will be forced to take the Pine Street exit. They can then drive southbound Memorial Drive and get on either the Poplar Street Bridge or I-55-I-44. The detour for the westbound interstate will be to exit onto northbound Memorial Drive and continue on 3rd Street to the ramp to westbound I-70 at the Martin Luther King Bridge.

Motorists are advised to consider other routes such as Interstate 64, I-55 or I-44.

The closure will allow crews to demolish the Walnut Street Bridge as part of the plan to build a park over I-70 to connect downtown St. Louis with the area around the Gateway Arch, which sits on the other side of the interstate.

The Eads Bridge will also be closed until Monday to ensure interstate traffic moves smoothly.
