ST. LOUIS—A 19-year-old southern Illinois man dubbed the “I-55 Bandit” on Friday pleaded guilty to felony bank robbery for committing a series of crimes earlier this year.
According to court documents, Andrew Maberry of O’Fallon, Ill., robbed a Commerce Bank branch in Arnold on July 2.
As part of his plea agreement, Maberry admitted to also robbing nine other banks in Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, West Virginia and Tennessee. Out of the nine, one was in Cape Girardeau, Mo, one was in Crystal City, Mo. and another was in Edwardsville, Ill.
The FBI dubbed Maberry the “I-55 Bandit” because some of the crimes occurred near Interstate 55.
He turned himself into police in September after bank surveillance camera pictures were released to the media.
Maberry could spend up to 20 years in prison and be fined $250,000. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
