(KMOV) – The Humane Society of Missouri has announced that it has saved 18 starving horses and donkeys from a property in Vernon County.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Department has found seven deceased horses, five severely underweight horses in addition to the low-quality hay.

The Humane Society was notified earlier this week by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department of the poor conditions at the property and was asked to assist in removing the animals after a warrant was obtained last night.

The rescued horses and donkeys will be taken to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union.  The animals will remain in the custody of the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing scheduled later this month in Nevada, Missouri.

If custody of the horses and donkeys is awarded to the Humane Society of Missouri, as many of the animals as possible will be made available for adoption when healthy.
