ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Three people are safe and one person is in the hospital after a south St. Louis apartment caught fire Sunday morning. Several oxygen tanks in the apartment created a dangerous situation for residents and firefighters.

The fire started at a house on the 3300 block of Keokuk around 7:30 a.m. When fire crews arrived on the scene the front of the building was consumed with flames and  had spread to the back of the building. The fire was able to be put out within 15 minutes of fire crews arriving.

The house is a four-family flat, but the fire only affected one apartment. Four people were inside the apartment that caught fire. The apartment did not have a working smoke detector. A neighbor reportedly smelled smoke and alerted the family.

Officials say several oxygen tanks and canisters were stored in the apartment, but none exploded in the fire.

One adult victim was transported to the hospital for a wellness check but does not appear to have any life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. The three other apartments in the unit were not damaged.
