ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis building with a long history is expected to come down this week.

Spirtas Wrecking Co. will begin dismantling the Cupples 7 warehouse, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The company will need about three months to tear down the structure because much of the red brick and some of the heavy-timber frame can be salvaged.

The seven-story building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was condemned by the city in 2008 and barricades were put up after it nearly collapsed in 2011.

A realty company was considering a $40 million renovation plan, but no deal could be reached.

Preservationists are disappointed by the loss of the century-old building, part of the Cupples Station warehouse complex near Busch Stadium.
