(KMOV) – Two people were killed after a fire broke out in a north St. Louis home Monday evening.
According to fire officials, the fire started inside the home located on the 5700 block of Bartmer shortly before 6 p.m. Heavy fire was visible from the 2nd floor of the three-story home.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims, later identified as Dorothy Jones, 80, was found on the first floor. Her nephew, 60-year-old Thomas McKinney, was discovered on the second floor.
Kenny Ball, a family friend, said it still hadn't sunk in that his longtime friend, McKinney, was gone.
"You cant even really describe it probably in the middle of the night its going to hit me," Ball said.
Ball and neighbors say they'll remember Thomas for his hard work around the community.
"Sadness so sad he was a good man he'd cut my grass when I didn't have no money to cut it," Ball said.
Firefighters contained the fire, which relatives believe may have been sparked by a space heater. The exact cause is not known.
Authorities continue to investigate.
Funeral services for Jones, McKinney are scheduled to take place at Friendship Baptist Church located at 5597 Etzel Ave on Sunday February 2. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m with the funeral service to follow at 3 p.m.
