ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The heat was responsible for several problems in the St. Louis area Monday.

Two high schools, Parkway North, and Affton closed early because air conditioning at the schools stopped working.  Officials also said 40 people were taken to St. Louis County hospitals for heat-related illnesses since Wednesday, but only eight were admitted.

Officials also said the heat was responsible for three water main breaks, including one on South Lindbergh that led to the early dismissal of Lindbergh High School.

Close to 15,000 people were without power in Illinois when a vehicle hit a large sub-transmission police on Old Caseyville Road in Swansea.
