Students at Henry Elementary School in the Parkway District got a special treat Thursday -- they were able to wear hats.
That's usually not allowed, but for 50 cents or more, students could wear anything from wizard hats to sombreros for "Hats on for Cancer" day. All of the money supports the St. Louis non-profit Friends of Kids with Cancer. About 200 area schools participate every year. Each school brings in around $500 for the charity.
"I think it's a lot of fun and that this actually helps children who need it more than us," Alex Volz, 4th grader, says.
"I think if we help kids like that it will make them feel more like kids and not just bored in the hospital," Maddie Schoessel, 4th grader, says.
The day was created in honor of Kevin Beffa, a student at Henry Elementary who lost his fight with cancer in 1995. Today is the 15th anniversary of Hats On.
