(KMOV) – The Metropolitan Sewer District warns Creve Coeur residents to stay away from a creek after raw sewage spilled into it.
Lance LeComb with MSD said on Friday morning, raw sewage was seen seeping out of manhole covers in the 900 block of East Rue de la Banque. A sanitary sewer line blocked with grease caused raw sewage to spill out. It was also discovered that some sewage flowed into nearby Benbush Creek.
MSD workers placed a temporary dam in the creek to contain the sewage so workers could flush the creek with fresh water and pump the sewage back into the sanitary sewer system. MSD is asking residents to stay away from the creek for at least 36 hours.
Crews have been working overtime to clear the clog. Large cleaning equipment has been brought in to deal with the mess. MSD’s next step is to find out who is responsible for the clog.
LeComb said, "Even if you have a garbage disposal, grease should not be tossed down the sink. It should be done like grandma back in the day when she cooked bacon. Put it in the can or jar and dispose of it or take it to your local municipality as well."
MSD has not ruled out a nearby subdivision or apartment complex as being the culprit.
MSD will be power washing a mile and a half of the Benbush Creek bank. They will be working for the next couple days pumping water out of the creek and taking it to a waste water plant for disposal.
