(KMOV) – Police say 42-year-old Anthony Burkey was taken to the Emergency Room on Friday afternoon after violently hallucinating and trying to break down a neighbor's door; he fought hospital personnel upon arrival and was sedated by them, collapsed, and was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m.

Officials say he was being restrained by three guards when he suddenly stopped fighting and became unresponsive. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Granite City Police were called to the hospital and have taken over the investigation.

An autopsy was performed on Saturday and preliminary results indicate the possible cause of death as excited delirium or suffocation, but final results remain pending further laboratory and toxicological testing.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Irwin Funeral Home in Granite City, IL.

The investigation is ongoing.
