Granite City hit hard by powerful storms

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV) – High-powered storms swept through the Granite City area Friday night, causing extensive damage to homes and businesses in the area.

Witnesses report large trees uprooted and downed power lines in the area of Bern Avenue and Myrtle Avenue along Maryville Road.

The Hit and Run convenience store lost its roof.  Across the street the wind blew in the garage door, then lifted the garage roof up in the air, dropping it in the neighbor's backyard.  

Nearby a car parked on the street on Myrtle Avenue was picked up an dropped on the front lawn of a home.  That house lost it porch, and the windows of the homeowner's minivan were blown out.  

Residents in the area tell KMOV.com that a garage was destroyed in the area.  The streets are littered with downed tree limbs and power lines.

No injuries were reported.
