GRAFTON, Ill. (AP) -- The city of Grafton in southern Illinois is hoping to receive grant money to open a museum.

The Telegraph in Alton reports that Grafton has applied for a $650,000 Public Museum Capital Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The city had to pay a non-refundable $1,600 application fee.

The money would go to build a museum to house artifacts that are now at the city’s visitor center.

Mayor Tom Thompson is a self-described history buff. He says having a museum would be a great addition to the city and offer another activity for families to share.

Grafton is just north of St. Louis, Mo., on the banks of the Mississippi River.
