BLACK JACK, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Residents at a north St. Louis County apartment complex were evacuated early Thursday morning after copper thieves allegedly caused a gas leak.

According to reports, the leak happened at the Heatherton Apartments in the 600 block of Sheringham Place around 12:30 a.m.

Authorities said someone broke into an empty unit and ripped an oven off the wall to steal it. That’s what caused the leak, according to police.

The broken gas line was repaired a short time later and the 10 to 15 residents were allowed back inside.

Police are now looking for the suspect or suspects responsible for the leak. Police believe they may have been trying to steal copper.
