MARYLAND HEIGHTS (KMOV) – Police say a search for a man accused of trying to abduct a 7-year-old girl in Maryland Heights on Thursday has been called off due to a misunderstanding.

The girl initially told police the encounter happened while she was playing on the drive way of her home Thursday. The girl said the man approached her and asked her to get in his car.

Police began searching for a man, but called it off because the girl misinterpreted what she saw. A family said they saw the news of the attempted abduction on a local television station and called police because they thought they were involved.

According to police, a man and his daughter were driving when they saw his son walking home after being dropped off by the bus.

Police said the son got into the vehicle and they drove home.

Authorities said the 7-year-old girl thought the man was talking to her and reported an attempted abduction to police.

Police said no children were ever in danger.
