ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- An FBI Special Agent who led efforts to dismantle a violent heroin ring in St. Louis died unexpectedly while on duty Thursday, according to a release.
Special Agent Jarrod Petrelli, 34, was reportedly attending a law enforcement conference on gangs in Florida when he passed away. Authorities say he dedicated the last four years of his life to fighting violent gangs.
In Oct. 2012, Petrelli received the Distinguished Service Award for leading a long-term investigation dubbed "Operation Scorpion King." The investigation helped dismantle a violent heroin-trafficking operation in the St. Louis area.
Petrelli, a Massachusetts native, leaves behind a wife and three young daughters.
Visiting hours will be held on Dec. 11 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home in Weymouth, Mass. Petrelli will be buried with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Petrelli's memory to the American Heart Assocation.
