(KMOV) -- The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved $120 million for a new Daniel Boone Bridge across the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties. Construction on the new bridge should begin in 2013.
The commission approved the new bridge as part of the 2012-2017 State Transportation Improvement Plan.
The new bridge will be constructed similar to the I-64 project in St. Louis. Through this process, design and construction will be completed by the same contractor on an accelerated time frame. The Missouri Department of Transportation will award the contract in the next year.
The location for the new bridge is unknown and will be determined as part of the contract. The preferred alternative is to construct a new bridge near the existing eastbound bridge.
The new bridge would carry eastbound traffic and a protected bike-pedestrian lane between the Chesterfield and Katy trails.
