ST. LOUIS -- The bitter cold that settled over the Midwest is causing a spike in frostbite cases.

KMOX Radio reports that two St. Louis hospitals—Barnes-Jewish and Saint Louis University Hospital—have treated nearly a dozen cases of frostbite from this week’s blast of arctic air. Emergency room workers say some of the victims were exposed to the elements for just a few minutes.

Dr. Laurie Byrne of Saint Louis University Hospital says frostbite can occur after skin is exposed to extreme cold for 15 to 30 minutes—faster if you’re wet.
