(KMOV) -- Forsyth School sixth grader Olivia Long is the champion of the 24th Annual St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee and will move on to represent St. Louis in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

The final round of the 24th Annual St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee was held Saturday at Maryville University.  Long was one of 30 students who advanced to Saturday's final rounds. After three hours of spelling, Long won the championship in Round 12. During the competition, she spelled such words as: redact, roodebok, innocuous, intaglio, rottweiler, and physiotherapy without error.

Long will represent St. Louis at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. from May 31st through June 6th this year.  Over 60,000 students from public, private, parochial, home and charter schools participated in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee. Over 300 students from metro-area schools who won their school spelling bee took a written test on March 6. Thirty students advanced to Saturday's oral competition.

Schools from Missouri and Illinois take part in the annual educational tradition, which reinforces important life-long language skills such as spelling, vocabulary and word usage.

The event was sponsored by Maryville University.
