ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Former longtime St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus passed away Tuesday.

Justus had recently resigned his post as sheriff due to his recent illness.

Justus was sheriff for more than 30 years and had been in law enforcement for 59 years. Before becoming sheriff, he worked for the Cahokia Police Department.

Justus was also known as an innovator. On one occasion, he sent out fliers to fugitives that told them they had won free pairs of shoes. When the fugitives came to pick the shoes up, they were arrested.
