MARYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) – A Madison County Grand Jury on Thursday indicted a former Maryville police officer for allegedly filing fake worker’s compensation claims.
Richard Turner, 43, was charged with two counts of felony theft and two counts of unlawful violation of workers compensation act.
According to court documents, Turner claimed in February 2009 that he sustained a back injury while working. As a result of the claim, Turner was given over $38,000 in worker’s compensation from the Village of Maryville and had over $150,000 in medical costs paid for by the insurance company.
Investigators with the Maryville Police Department launched an investigation after noticing questionable circumstances and determined the injury happened while he was off work.
Turner, who had worked for Maryville since November 2003, resigned in October 2011
If found guilty, Turner faces up to 28 years in prison.
His bond was set at $10,000.
