ST. LOUIS (KMOV)- For the first time in Forest Park history, a controlled burn was started in the Deer Lake Natural Area just east of the visitors’ center.

About 14 acres will be set ablaze that should take most of the morning to burn, so do not be alarmed if you see smoke rising from the park this week.

Emergency fire crews will be standing by during the fire, however they still must wait for the right weather conditions due to worries about mitigating the smoke that will come from the fire.

The burn is said to be needed to clear out overgrowth crowding out some native plants.
