(KMOV.com) – A 4-alarm blaze destroyed a recycling facility located along Interstate 55 in south St. Louis County Friday afternoon.

Fire broke out at the Republic Recycling facility around 12:30p.m. The scene is located in the 4000 block of Bayless. There are no reports of injuries.

Flames swirled into the air and a huge cloud of thick, dark smoke could be seen for miles.

Preliminary indications are that the fire started outside the facility. Authorities say fire crews would be on the scene for most of the afternoon.

Interstate 55 is open; however the northbound exit ramp at Bayless was closed for several hours, blocked by fire trucks. It has since reopened.
