(KMOV) – A toaster is to blame for the house fire that killed a woman and two children just south of Rolla, Missouri Wednesday morning.
Authorities said Darlene Light noticed the fire and started evacuating the house.
She was able to escape safely with a baby and two mentally challenged adults.
Darlene's 40-year-old daughter Linda, who lives next door, ran into the house to try and rescue two other children.
Linda Light, her 10-year-old adopted son Ben, and a 16-month-old girl named Brooklyn were killed.
Authorities said Darlene lived at the home with eight others. She was known for taking in kids that no one else wanted. She welcomed 22 children in her home over the years.
Rolla Rural Fire Department Chief Bruce Southard said the fire started in the kitchen. Investigators believe the toaster was the cause.
A trust fund has been set up for the family at the Phelps County Bank. There are several locations. Food and money are needed.
