COLLINSVILLE, Il. (KMOV) -- Firefighters remained on the scene overnight after a fire broke out in a Collinsville complex Wednesday evening and destroyed 4 condos, damaged others and killed family pets.
The fire started around 6:40 p.m. at a town home complex located on Rolling Oaks Drive.
When firefighters arrived, they reported large flames shooting from the roof of the building. According to reports, it took fire crews over six hours to extinguish the flames.
Julie Gable was with her family, who were in town from Michigan, at the Delmar Loop when she got a call from her neighbor about the blaze.
"All she did was say 'get home. Your house is on fire.' I don't know anything, I just can see everything looks like it is gone," Gable said.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but officials believe it started in the basement of one of the complexes in a laundry room and quickly spread.
The American Red Cross is helping five families displaced by the fire with lodging, food and clothing. There were no injuries, but some family pets were reportedly lost in the fire.
Two firefighters remained on the scene overnight Wednesday into Thursday and were dousing hot spots that continued to flare up through the night. Fire officials said investigators will be back on the scene Thursday morning to try to pinpoint an exact cause of the fire.
