ST. CHARLES, Missouri -- The former owners of one of the nation’s biggest marketers of auto service contracts have been indicted on federal charges, just hours after one of them pleaded guilty to Missouri charges of theft and fraud.
The indictment unsealed Thursday in St. Louis charges brothers Darain and Cory Atkinson with conspiracy and filing false tax returns.
The Atkinsons owned Wentzville-based US Fidelis, which collapsed in 2009 amid allegations of consumer fraud. Federal prosecutors say they used company funds for luxury homes and vehicles.
Earlier Thursday, Darain Atkinson pleaded guilty in St. Charles County Circuit Court to state charges of fraud and stealing consumer refunds. Cory Atkinson faces trial Sept. 4 in state court.
An attorney for Darain Atkinson says he has done everything to accept responsibility.
