(KMOV) – A two-year-old boy was the victim of severe abuse in Franklin County and his father is facing charges.

According to court documents, staff at the child’s daycare, Building Block Day Care, noticed several bruises on him and called police.

“It was very apparent that it was a forceful incident,” said Adrianne Rettinghaus.

The signs were too obvious to miss for staffers at the St. Clair daycare as they were changing the boy’s diaper on Tuesday morning. He had heavy bruising on his buttocks, legs and lower ribs.

“It’s hard especially when it's a young child and someone who driest know how to protect themselves against something like that,” said Rettinghaus.

The child’s father, Michael Boyer, admitted he beat his son with his hand then a belt because he didn’t want to go to sleep. When the child didn’t want to get out of bed the next morning, Boyer said he beat him again.

“Basically said it was discipline but I've been doing this a long time and there's a substantial difference between discipline and abuse,” said Lt. Tom Leasor, Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Based on that belief deputies booked Boyer on felony abuse charges. News 4 discovered prior arrests for Boyer who was on probation from a 2009 conviction.

Parents at the daycare were happy to know someone is keeping a watchful eye.

“I think it's good on their part for being aware enough to call and get the cops involved,” said Adrienne Donnelly.
