(KMOV)-- An annual effort will begin in St. Louis Wednesday, in an effort to bring peace to St. Louis area streets.
“Family Week” begins Wednesday morning with a reception at city hall.
Among those playing a role in this year’s effort will be the family of Tyrone Thompson, a former police officer killed in Black Jack last summer during an attempted robbery.
Thompson’s mother told News 4 the senseless violence is a major problem here, but she has hope.
“I’m hoping we can reach some of those young men and women out there that are perpetrating this violence on families because they don't realize how much hurt they put not only on families, but friends, relatives and other acquaintances when things like this happen,” Betty Thompson, Family Week co-chair, said.
Thompson wants to send that message to thousands of young people over the next couple weeks. The effort will culminate Sunday, August 14 in Peacefest at St. Vincent Park.
Family Week’s opening ceremony will be held in the rotunda of city hall Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
