( – The family of a motorcyclist shot and killed in Granite City Sunday morning says the man's death was likely over a relationship he had with a woman.

According to police, Travis Mayes was found dead next to his motorcycle in the 4700 block of Nameoki Rd.

Family members say Mayes pulled over on his motorcycle because a car was following him. Gunshots were fired shortly after both vehicles stopped and Mayes was killed instantly.

According to Mayes' relatives, the shooting was over a dispute Mayes and the suspect had about a woman.

"Travis has had a lot of girlfriends and there was something about this girl that caught him," said Mayes' niece Amber Duke. "I asked him to leave her alone because he was arguing with this guy for months. It's so stupid for anyone to lose their life over a girl."

Officers said they later arrested a 22-year-old man at his home in Pontoon Beach. The suspect, who has not been identified, is being held at the Madison County Jail pending charges.

"Not only did he take Travis' life, but he took part of my life," said Travis Mayes' nephew, Joe Mayes. "He left two of Travis' children without a dad."

While investigating the shooting, an intoxicated driver struck an officer's vehicle near the scene. Police said the officer was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The intoxicated driver was taken into custody.

"You look at him and people judge a book by its cover. You think he's a thug and no good," Mayes said. "He's the best guy you'll ever meet. Ain't no one out there who will forget his smile."
