For the first time in its 87-year history, Fairmount Park’s opening day was postponed due to the massive snowstorm that hit the St. Louis area on Sunday.
Park officials say the truck will open on Friday with a post time of 7:30 p.m.
Fairmount Park was initially scheduled to open on Tuesday, but those races will be scheduled for a later date.
Fairmount Park Spokesperson Jon Sloane said while the stands, the parking lots and the facility would be ready to go, the track had too much snow on it that couldn't be plowed.
"Not only do you have to clear all the snow, clear all the ice, but also a racing surface is many elements, dirt loam, harder surface underneath just can't dig it up," he said. "Have to get rid of everything underneath, then resurface to make it soft enough and safe enough for the horses to run on."
The loam is a soil mixture of sand, silt and clay. It's a softer surface so horses can run on it without hurting their ankles.
